The Horse Paintings of Jun Matsushima at Gallery QUADRO

In the heart of Tokyo, along the vibrant Meguro Dori Avenue, stands Gallery QUADRO—a beacon of contemporary art since 2019. This esteemed gallery is renowned for its diverse collection, showcasing a wide array of stylistic expressions. Committed to fostering long-term relationships with artists, Gallery QUADRO respects their creative freedom, supporting them through exhibitions, art fairs, and by placing their works in prominent collections. Their mission is to present works by emerging and mid-career artists that inspire, excite, and intrigue an increasingly diverse clientele.

Among the notable artists featured at Gallery QUADRO is Jun Matsushima, a Tokyo-born painter whose dynamic works have garnered international attention. Born in 1981, Matsushima honed his skills in traditional realism at the Academy of Art in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Since 2012, he has collaborated with dancers and musicians across various genres, from classical to contemporary, often depicting the human figure in motion. His art is characterized by rhythmical, crescendoing lines that create highly abstracted, figurative compositions. These works explore the interplay between what is visually distinguished and what is intuitively perceived of movement, culminating in an evocation of motion itself.

During a recent visit to Gallery QUADRO, currently undergoing subtle renovations, CHILANGA.COM was captivated by two of Matsushima's paintings of horses, prominently displayed and visible from across the street. The dynamic energy and fluidity captured in these pieces are a testament to his unique artistic vision. Matsushima graciously welcomed us and shared insights into his recent endeavors. Having just returned from a successful exhibition in France, he is now focusing on his work in Japan but harbors aspirations to spend time abroad, with a particular interest in Italy.

Matsushima's talent is evident in the artworks displayed at Gallery QUADRO. His collaboration with dancers leads to spontaneous and intuitive executions, where improvised movements inspire his creative process. The repetitive lines in his drawings gradually accrue, forming layers akin to a musical fugue, where voices associate to create harmony. This technique results in compositions that are both visually striking and emotionally resonant.

His artistic journey includes numerous solo exhibitions, such as "Nero" at Setagaya Citizen Gallery in Tokyo (2011), "Silver in Black" at Yorozu Gallery in Tokyo (2012), and "Stallion" at Paris Art Shopping in France (2019). These exhibitions highlight his evolving style and the growing recognition of his work on the international stage.

CHILANGA.COM highly recommends exploring Matsushima's work, both in person at Gallery QUADRO and online. His official website offers a comprehensive view of his portfolio, providing deeper insights into his creative process and the breadth of his talent.
